The server move is now complete, hopefully all is not broken.

Oh ec.je, You’ve Changed

Ok, so I wrote about moving the ec.je wordpress installation over to a new server, well joke is on me, since I’ve now officially moved my website on to a Gopher server only a few metres from my bed.

Because not everybody is in to what I am, you can rest assured that there is a web interface.

If you have a Gopher client, you can vist gopher://g.ec.je:70 or if you’re just a plain jane, go for the old three Ws – https://ec.je

Going Back to DreamHost

After a bit of a go on my own terms using my own server, it’s been a good run with the server from DigitalOcean but since my servers on there have become exclusively for business usage.

The problem with that, is I have to hand the account over to myself, the business and justify the business expense.

So because bureaucracy is as it is, I have to seperate the personal server from the bank of business ones. And because my DreamHost account is personal, I started up a DreamHost VPS for this site and EC.JE.

During this week, I’ve got to do the manual part, setting it all up, getting the plugins ready and moving the content. At least the images are still hosted on a CDN service.

Version 10 Cometh

A while back I registered a domain vx.sg, the name of the blog was Version X (eg Version 10) because it was my first folley with using Ghost as a blogging platform.

I wasn’t really feeling Ghost to be fair, and it was legitimately the 10th incarnation of my blogging activities.

However, since spinning down the old Ghost server, the domain has remained unused. Until today, since the 10th version of my BBS is also now coming to age, it seems apt to use this domain for what it’s designed for. And I do like it myself.

I’ve also put together a small website on there for updates and of course, on the news server we now have a local group called mmn.v10.

I’ll also post to my blog here about changing up the BBS, what I add, etc.

Text Based 4 LYFE

I’ve been having a bit of an off week, as in when I get home there is literally nothing I am doing. Normally, I would hit up my usual haunts such as Monochrome, The WeLL and SDF. Oh and of course my own BBS, cos I ain’t rude like.

However, in my drained of life energy state, it’s been hard to not go to bed at 18h when I just arrived home. One would assume that I can fix this easily, which is not the case.

But having the chance to pop my head back on to my accounts here, I’ve regained some ability to pull myself back in to the realm of text. I’ve been here for a while to be fair, on sdf I’m sure it was the mid 2000s and mono, well, here ye go :

<ESC> E bitches

Like that kind of dedication, mind, not that many hours during that time, is nearly LiveJournal level.

If anybody has suggestions of text based boards or software that I can install on a wayward laptop with Ubuntu and extra time, I am more than happy to know.

Switchin’ Up The Email

In my endless quest to go full on secure, move away from the GMail, AOL Mail (I genuinely still have my AOL account, I just don’t use it like a sane human being in 2019) and they Yahoos, I weighed up my options last night and I went for it.

I was aiming to use Tutanota, but unfortunately for now it doesn’t have DKIM for custom domains and any ability to import old emails. The old email thing is really quite important for me as I tend to drop an email account and get screwed by not having an email from 2005. No jokes.

After deciding my needs, I in the end, went to ProtonMail, it’s more on the expensive side of what I wanted to spend since after balancing out what domains I was bringing, how many and the amount of aliases/users I needed, I chose the Visionary plan.

I was able to bring over my mmn.on.ca email address (my public PGP key is here) and the majority of my short domain addresses quickly, but the real sticking point is ec.je. The problem with this domain is, unsurprisingly Google. I use my account there for everything, my Google Account, Play Store, etc. I’m dreading the switch over process to it taking my business domain over and what kind of drama that could possibly ensue.

Waiting, Hating.

It’s been a long old three weeks my friend, my bank account being more bare than my cupboards. I have had to get very, very creative in what I have been eating.

Then there is the not being able to smoke thing, mix that with not eating and quite frankly I’m shocked that people around me still be breathing. Although I did throw a pot across the room, because it dared not to stay on the shelf.

AIN’T GONNA DO THAT AGAIN ARE YOU ?

Although I have planned to go crazy in Burger King later tonight, whether or not I can afford it, I do not care. One needs a burger and bacon fries.

27 Years Later

Over the christmas holidays, I managed to complete Sonic the Hedgehog all the way to the end.  It’s not an easy game, since all games of that era are surprisingly very difficult.

But with the Sega Mega Drive Flashback console and it’s glorious save function, I managed to cheat complete it without too much trouble.

I must admit that I was very disapointed with the end of the game, it kind of just finished, got a few screens and credits.  If I had tear ducts and feelings I would have cried.

But here is hoping that Sonic 2 will end on a better finale.

The Life and Times of AX.PE

I never really had a true plan for AX.PE, like really I did not. I’ve been doing things with it for a while now but nothing of real interest.

It seems now that I have found a little pet project for it, I discovered Known. Having read up about it, and being particularly interested in the social media sharing part (since I won’t have to be stuck in the Facebook endless loop), I decided to go for it.

However, it appears that they may have omitted some pertinent information about the whole connecting to anti-social medias. Ya gotta pay. And actually while writing this post and getting lost in the documentation, it appears that it ain’t a thing any more.

Which severely changes the tone of this particular post, if I can figure out how to get it to communicate with the social networks, then it’ll be a good thing. If I can’t then, really it won’t replace what’s already happening here. WordPress does all the graft and I don’t need to Tweet.

It is quite light weight on the eyes, so I’ll still give it a play around and see what happens.

Woah, ads.

One of the things I implemented last night on my site ec.je happens to be Google AdSense, I’m not going to lie, I am a broke ass bitch and the £53 I made in the past three years be staring at my sorry self waiting to hit the big £60 payment.

I already put WordAds here, since they don’t really interfere, plus I have included a DreamHost ad that shares my referral funds (which incidentally all referral cash goes to my hosting bill). And for my blog that is more than enough.

For ec.je, I can be a bit liberal, but Google has gone FULL ON CRAYLAY. Like I mean, now I understand why Buzzfeed looks like Times Square or Piccadilly Circus. Like I know not a lot of people read my blog, I don’t really write it for that reason, but if hundreds did, what Google is doing on the other site would totally drive you all mad.

I’m not 100% sure that I will keep the Google Ads up there, but I promise you dear reader, they’ll stay up until I get my hard earned 60 squids.

Although in the interim I will see if I can do anything to reign in the old banners. I did also make sure those annoying mobile pop ups will not be a thing. You can at least thank me for that.

Oopsies

Not like it makes a lot of difference, but I didn’t realise that my plugin to repost my entries on to Dreamwidth (who then reposts to LiveJournal, cos lol api) blocked comments.

That’s been fixed now, and I even dropped in a link to the comments page here.

Crappy Holidays Errberdy

I’ve been spending the weekend eating snax and getting my arsewhopped by a game about as old as I am. Can’t say this wasn’t a success, because I’m totally adulting correctly here.

Other than that, I did a bit of work (lol) on ec.je, added a couple extra pages, totally did not write much though. I also finally got around to fixing the link on c64.fr. I will soon be adding tings.

Now with it being pre-work insomnia time, I’m trying to find a non-christmas trash film to watch on television, I have 200 channels and it’s proving to be a bit of a tough cookie this.

On a side note, I accessed my Yahoo! account since like who knows when to re-access my Flickr account. Hello 6570 emails which you can’t bulk select. Great job Yahoo!

I always forget the title.

Oh what a long week this has been, but at least it’s over for now. And if anything, fnac being a pile of arse with my delivery last weekend has improved things a bit.

Game over bitch
Game over bitch

I’ve been between not getting past the second level of Sonic the Hedgehog and writing junk on ec.je. I finally managed to work out what I’m doing with my sites, getting a bit back to basics here.

Both this site and ec.je are run on WordPress, because by far it’s the most flexable way and I have a soft spot for it. But ec.je is just static content, no blog entries, although I am using the blogging function there to cross post the newsletter and bulletins from the board on the web. Here is the actual blog, for blogging and rambling and whatever.

I tried in the past to use my LiveJournal for everything, but mixing blog with site was not really happening. You live, laugh, love and learn the hard way I guess.

Also rather than using my own installation on my own server, I’ve left ec.je on DreamHost but both sites share the same DigitalOcean Space for the image library. Might as well get my money’s worth on that #fivebuxisfivebux.

I’ll leave this post here, because it be time to visit my friend the ring stealer.

We have a theme

And ads, sorry about that. Baby needs a new pair of shoes.

The theme is basic, does the job and at least unlike the new Google Adsense, I can determine where my ads go. Rather than their all new we choose where we drop.

Happy days.

Looking for a new theme

Since I am bound to return to the world of work tomorrow, I figured I’d have a look at another wordpress theme.  Going theme mad is not my normal jam, seeing as my LiveJournal has had the same look since the mid-2000s.

But sometimes reading on this theme is a bit complicated and if I have images, it does not look quite right.

But I’ve seen a few websites (such as sampsa.com) that seem to pull of a simple out of the box WordPress theme.  I’ve got a few that I’ve installed and I shall see how each are pulled off, wish me luck.

Crazy Neighbour at it Again

There is somebody I detest to no end, and that is my psychopath neighbour.

When she’s not screaming at all hours, she’s leaving the shared spaces in a disgusting state.

However, today she hit the lowest point. She as usual was using her outdoor voice on the phone, then wandered in to the toilet and had a pee while speakerphoning whoever is unlucky enough to know her.

Oh mer gherd

Literally me, right now

I have managed to do two things in the last twenty four hours that I have been wanting to do forevers.

The first being, after many years of wanting to run my own version of the LiveJournal code, I finally got my shit together to do so.  Granted, since LiveJournal has since dropped off the open source circuit, it’s a Dreamwidth install.  But it’s forked off LiveJournal’s code.

Bref, I have a couple issues with the install, it’s not totally stable yet.  But It’s live at ao.tc (you can see me here : [personal profile] kevin)

The second, very much tied in to the first, is that I have finally been able to liberate my 18 years of posts from LiveJournal !  THEY ARE ALL HERE.

I managed this feat during a test of the Dreamwidth code, I was just by chance giving it a go at importing from LJ.  And It worked, very well.  So I began the great WordPress Import of all my post that I brough to ao.tc from LJ.  During the first run, using the WordPress still on DreamHost, I accidentally reposted them all one by one to Dreamwidth (sorry guys!) and managed to get myself blocked from my own server.

Well, that I was not having, actually to be fair I had another plan in mind and I apologise to DreamHost for doing it, but I spun up a server in the Toronto Data Centre of my favourite Cloud Instance provider and installed an instance of the WordPress.  My data is finally all mine, I have also setup a bucket to drop all the images in the cloud, I originally wanted this to stay with DreamObjects, but I gave up on modifying the AWS S3 WP Plugin (for this evening anyways).

But I promise that I will find a way to get it back over to DreamObjects, cos you’ll always be me Joolie DreamHost.

I couldn’t believe that I managed to pull it all off, but here we are, running off a WordPress install located in Toronto.  How the times have changed.

Once I manage to get the Dreamwidth code all up and running in a more stable way, I’ll write a bit more about it.  But there is one shame here, I still can’t post back to LiveJournal.  That is unfortunate.  So LiveJournal, sort your API out, so we can be friends again xx
